What is Walking Netball?

On this page, skip to

If you don't know anything about regular netball, don't worry! We will teach you and it's very easy to learn. You don't even have to read this page, just turn up.

At Blacktown, walking netball is played for fun; there is no pressure because no score is kept. It is a game, not a competition.

Have a look at this video, it is clips from one of our games.

The netball court is a hard surface and at Blacktown we play outdoors. The court is divided into thirds and has a hoop on a pole at each end.

The aim of the game is for your team to score a goal by throwing the ball through the hoop at your end of the court.

If you are new to netball, we're looking forward to meeting you!

Walking netball is played on a netball court with some modified rules.

If you are curious and you want more detail about how the game is played, you will find it here. We don't expect you to read it or know it to come to walking netball.

The challenge: can you play without even the smallest jump to grab the ball? You will love it and laugh more than you have in ages. Guaranteed.

And because you know netball isn't really non-contact, be mindful of giving people space. This is the real version of non-contact netball.

Netball lovers guide to modifed rules

Compared with regular netball, there are only a few modified rules:

  1. No running or jumping - one foot must be on the ground at all times

  2. The 4 second rule: the ball must be released within 4 seconds

  3. The extra step: the foot that is grounded when the ball is caught can be regrounded - that is, an extra step can be taken than in regular netball.

What experienced netballers and supporters from Blacktown City Netball Association should expect
  1. Everyone is chill and it isn't really team against team, it's just fun

  2. No scoring (unless you want to count your own goals, because you are proud of your shooting skills, some shooters never change)

  3. It's not compulsory but just happens: all the players on both teams and the umpires usually celebrate every goal no matter which end it was scored at

  4. The umpires are part of the fun and part of the banter. Calls are calls, right or wrong the same as every netball game ever but with a more relaxed approach as it is a game not a competition

  5. BCNA club rivalry magically disapears

  6. You will get off the court after your first game in shock as to how challenging and fun it is! Every netball player who has joined in has had the same reaction, just ask them

  7. Complete relief that you know you won't ever have to give up netball

  8. And: for more fun play out of your usual position, you will laugh even more
